Brief Biography of H.H. Kyabgön Chetsang Rinpoche
His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, the 37th throne
holder of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage and 7th reincarnation of the
Chetsang Rinpoche is a manifestation of Avalokiteshvara (Buddha of
Compassion) and one of the two supreme throne-holders of the Drikung
Kagyu since the 17th century.
At the age of eleven, Drikung
Kyabgon gave his first public teaching and transmission, a long-life
empowerment, during the 1956 Monkey Year ceremonies of the Great
Drikung Phowa. Subsequently he began his philosophical studies at
the Nyima Changra monastic college of Drikung. Although he was four
years younger he studied together with the second Drikung lineage
holder, Chungtsang Rinpoche. His instructor was Bopa Tulku Dongag
Tenpa (1907-1959), introducing him to the philosophy of Madhyamaka.
He first studied basic texts, like The 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva
by Ngulchu Thogme Zangpo and Introduction to the Bodhisattva's Way
of Life (Bodhicharyāvatāra) by Shāntideva.
Although most of
the heads of the other Tibetan Buddhist lineages fled Tibet when the
Communist government took over control of Tibet, His Holiness did
not escape to India until 1975. Rinpoche conceded to the appeals of
the Drikung lamas in exile and so he was again symbolically
enthroned as the Drikung Kyabgon during a ceremony with the Dalai
Lama. By this act he expressed the promise to take responsibility
for the lineage in the future. Initially though, he traveled to the
USA, where his parents had in the meantime emigrated to. There he
learned English, while earning his living as a part-time at a
McDonald's and other restaurants. He returned to India 3 years
later.
Drikung Kyabgon studied with numerous highly
accomplished lamas and Rinpoches of different traditions and
received from them teachings and initiations. He regards Dilgo
Khyentse Rinpoche (1910-1991) as one of his most important teachers.
In addition he received precious teachings and empowerments from
H.H. the Dalai Lama, H.H. the 16th Karmapa, H.H. Taklung Shabdrung
Rinpoche, H.H. Taklung Tsetrul and Khenpo Noryang

Five-fold Mahamudra Torma Empowerment Empowerment
Five-fold Mahamudra Torma Empowerment – The Drikung Kagyu lineage is the
main holder of a system of Mahamudra practice first taught explicitly by
Gampopa’s main disciple, Phakmo Drupa and later promoted widely by Kyobpa
Jikten Sumgon (founder of Drikung Kagyu). This system known as the
“Five-fold Mahamudra” presents a complete path to 0enlightenment in five
essential parts: generating the enlightenment mind (bodhicitta), arising
as deity, practicing guru-yoga, meditating on Mahamudra and dedicating
merit and wisdom. The Five-fold Mahamudra Torma Empowerment empowers
students to practice this specific system of Mahamudra practice. In
particular, this empowerment is conferred through the use of a torma (a
ritual-cake) that represents the highest yoga tantra deity, Cakrasamvara. |

Great Drikung Phowa and Amitayus Empowerment
Phowa, or ‘transference of consciousness at the time of death’ is the
simplest and most direct method to attain enlightenment. One of the six
Yogas of Naropa. There are many marvelous fascinating Phowa instructions,
in different Tantra texts of new and old lineages. However, the Drikung
Phowa lineage, whose Tibetan name "Jaktshukma" means "the standing grass
blade," is one of the most powerful and precious Phowa practices still
taught and practiced today. Phowa Jagtsukma instructions of transfer to
the pure land of Dewachen is included in the Terma of ancient secret
mantra lineage, which was rediscovered, and propagated a few hundred years
later, and are presently upheld in an unbroken lineage through the Drikung
masters.
Rinpoche will also confer the empowerment of the Long-life
Buddha Amitayus in the afternoon.
